Self-Cleaning Your Colon at Home
You may have read about colon cleansing and what it can do for you. But you would prefer to do it by yourself in the comfort of your own home. This is possible (though it is recommended that you do self-cleansing as a complement to a professionally-done cleansing by a certified colon hydrotherapist.) Here are some options for doing a self-cleansing.
1) Herbal supplements – There are various products to be found in drugstores and through online merchants which have the ingredient psyllium husk. Such products fall into the category of herbal supplements and may be bought as pills or capsules. As a bulk-forming laxative, psyllium contains a lot of fiber and mucilage. Psyllium is considered a laxative because the husk swells when it touches water – the bulk created when it is consumed triggers a reflex contraction of the sides of your bowel. Like a hard sponge, the psyllium helps to empty the bowel as it works its way down the tract.
Herbal supplements are helpful for short term emptying of the bowels but are not as effective at completely cleansing the bowel, eliminating toxic refuse, or boosting the health of colonic villi. Such products can trigger contraction but cannot cause oxidation which is necessary for internal cleansing.
2) Oxygen-based colon cleansers – Though these products can be quite expensive (supply for a month will cost you $20 up), they are recommended for people who are either afflicted with constipation or would like to completely clean out their colon.
The Safety of a Colon Cleanse
The key question here is: Is the safety of colon cleansers guaranteed all the time? Safety is based on the type of ingredients used in a colon cleanse and the action triggered by such substances. Herbal colon cleansers are not automatically safe since certain herbs can be quite strong and risky to use. It is also not advisable to habitually rely on some cleansing methods since they may be safe to use for a short period of time but are dangerous when used for a long time.
Those colon cleansers that have natural fiber ingredients such as prune juice, ground flax seeds, oat bran or psyllium husk are usually quite safe since such ingredients can be found naturally in foods and are safe to consume. They make human stool bulk up, absorb water from the intestines, and act as roughage that pressures the stool to be removed more easily and efficiently. Such kinds of colon cleansers can be recognized as simply another version of food-based fiber and thus are safe to consume.
The riskiest part of using such cleansers is relying on them all the time, rather than just occasionally or periodically just to stay regular in elimination.
The Danger of Using Certain Colon Cleansers
Certain colon cleansers are deemed completely dangerous and must never be used since they are detrimental to your long-term health and your capacity to function without the use of laxatives.
1) Cleansers containing empty, synthetic fillers 2) Harsh chemical laxatives
Both 1) and 2) are known to cause permanent nerve and muscle damage, rendering your body incapable of bowel movement without using methods such as enema. This is abnormal and may impact on the total health and independent functioning of an individual. These stimulating laxatives act by irritating the sides of the colon so that its muscles will be triggered to expel the irritating substance as well as other forms of waste within the colon.
3) Herbs (such as senna) – This may prevent waste matter in the intestines from absorbing water, causing the body to be dehydrated. The risk here is electrolyte imbalance.
4) Synthetic ingredients whose names you do not recognize
5) Repeated enemas – When done only occasionally and under the guidance of a professional healthcare practitioner, these can be safe. However, if these are done daily, this becomes a dangerous habit. Since the fluids of an enema may have harsh preservatives and the enema is quite strong, the rectal and colon tissues and nerve endings could be affected.
6) Making dietary changes – The importance of a diet that limits refined and processed foods and highlights the consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains cannot be over-emphasized. If you shift to this diet, you will find that your bowel movements become more efficient and your intestinal tract will be toxin-free.
Remember, too much of anything can be bad for you and the same holds true for colon cleansers. Consult a professional before you start any cleansing regimen and you will definitely cut down on the risks.
